What is a preventable hospitalization? Preventable hospitalizations are medical problems that present to emergency care at a hospital that are preventable, i.e. can be treated outside of a hospital through prior care management. Some examples of preventable hospitalizations include asthma or hypertension. The map above details the number of preventable hospitalizations of Medicare Beneficiaries from 2009-2012.
